The process involves five complexes that each target a different facial concern: wrinkles, texture, redness, pore size and hyper pigmentation. Any two can be mixed into Kiehl’s Skin Strengthening Concentrate, a protective, hydrating base of botanical oils and lipids.

The process is easy and quick.

A Kiehl’s associate leads the client through a series of questions to evaluate the skin in each of the five categories on a scale of 1 to 4. At hand is a book of photos illustrating four different degrees of wrinkles, pore size, redness, texture and hyper pigmentation to help select the number.

With the results crunched on an iPad, it’s easy to see which two issues are the greatest priority.

The associate packages a bottle of Skin Strengthening Concentrate with tubes of the two relevant complexes for you to open and combine at home. Finished with a custom made label, the 1-oz. serum costs $95.

Each of the five serums are concocted with proven active ingredients that are lipid soluble.

The Wrinkle Reducing Complex contains vitamin A (retinol) and pro-retinol (vitamin A palmitate).

Vitamin F and LHA (lipohydroxy acid) power the Texture Refining Complex to slough off dead skin cells and smooth skin. LHA is a gentler derivative of salicylic acid.

The Visible Redness Neutralizing Complex packs calming sunflower seed extract and vitamin E (alpha tocopherol), an antioxidant.

Samphira plant oil and salicylic acid work to shrink pores in the Pore Minimizing Complex.

Finally, the Brightening Complex combines oil-soluble vitamin C ester to lighten sun spots plus Scotch pine extract to promote brightness.

Clinical trials showed statistical improvement within two weeks of using the texture and redness complexes and within four weeks of regular application of the wrinkle, pore and brightening complexes, the company says.

“Through our research, including skincare consultations with millions of customers over the years, we’ve determined that addressing an individual’s top two concerns with one uniquely targeted and potent serum will provide the most effective, personalized skincare solution possible,” notes global education vice president Cammie Cannella.

On weekdays, customers can generally walk in for the service, but it’s best to make an appointment before for weekends.

The product takes Kiehl’s back to its origin as an apothecary dispensing customized herbal and natural remedies as well as prescription medicine in New York’s East Village.
