One of my responsibilities as the Manager of Art Programming for a shopping center (that many might confuse for a community center) is creating original programming, so that our visitors can use NorthPark as just that – a community space, a place to bring your family and relax. As a result, I am thrilled to announce that on October 18th, from 1 – 4pm, we are kicking off a new program – one that will continue to occur every other month – ArtROCKS!
The idea for ArtROCKS! stemmed from a recent visit to a music festival. I watched as music fans walked from stage to stage, enjoying the company of their family and friends, good food, and great music. I began to think about how something like that could translate to NorthPark. Personally, I consider my main focus to be educational art programming for children, so I wanted to find a way to hone in on that mission. When I was younger, I could do art projects all day long. I would pretend I was sick so that I could stay home from school and do art projects with my mom. So I thought, why not take a music festival model, but instead of bands, utilize local artists, and instead of music sets, do art activities. And so began the planning for ArtROCKS! In fact if you look at our logo, you’ll see influences from posters for Woodstock, Austin City Limits, Hangout Fest, Lollapalooza, and more.
At ArtROCKS! children’s creative side will be activated and engaged in innovative and exciting ways. And so here is how it works: anywhere from 8-10 local North Texas artists will come into CenterPark, our 1.4 acre garden in the center of NorthPark. They each have a workstation (craft tables) and an original project that is influenced by their own practice – but child friendly. Kids will be able to run around and do various different art projects while mom and dad relax on blankets and towels on the lawn. There will be NorthPark food vendors (lunch, sweets, ice cream, snacks) in the garden to satisfy any craving and finally, one great headlining band.
